The University of California, Los Angeles engaged Ayers Saint Gross to integrate the university’s previous sustainability efforts into a comprehensive vision that will inform the development of future implementation. The UCLA Sustainability Plan aligns the communications of over 20 existing sustainability-related planning tools with more than 90 different measured targets.

During a robust engagement process, the Ayers Saint Gross team engaged more than 1,000 UCLA Bruins across an inclusive cross-section of stakeholders including students, faculty, and staff. As part of this effort, the Ayers Saint Gross team participated in UCLA’s “Sustainival,” where students could interact directly and communicate their priorities.

The team evaluated existing plans and engaged in in-depth stakeholder planning charrettes to identify challenges and opportunities to advance sustainability. The planning effort focused extensively on integration and simplification of these various efforts to increase the ease with which almost 90,000 students, faculty, and staff can access, understand, and contribute to these efforts.

The implementation of the plan is set to occur both in the near- and long-term and provides actionable solutions to institutional-level challenges in a number of categories: Planetary and Human Health; Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Justice; Curricula and Research; Sustainable Campus; and Engagement. The plan also includes “12 to Try,” 12 steps individuals can take on campus to improve environmental health, promote equity, and conserve financial resources.

  • The 12 to Try chart lists steps individuals can take to create positive social, environmental, and economic change on campus.
  • A timeline for near and long-term goals lists steps UCLA can take to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.
