The Purposeful Walk is an outdoor immersive experience that acknowledges Brooklyn’s historical legacy while embedding it into daily life. The path functions as a living ribbon reconnecting community to cultural roots. Strategically placed interpretive signage links specific locations with personal stories and national narratives, transforming circulation into reflection.

Drawing on stories gathered through a series of community listening sessions, the walk incorporates stories of shared memories and experiences, audio interviews, community-led art programming, and moments of delight.

Rotating storytelling cubes explain how individual experiences are connected to a broader context and history of Black communities across the United States. In keeping with the District’s larger theme of innovation and medical research, interpretive panels acknowledge and celebrate medical contributions and advances by the Black community.

A custom map overlaps existing conditions with the beloved historic Brooklyn street grid, enabling community members to locate once-frequented barber shops, churches, restaurants, and Good Samaritan Hospital.

The walk culminates in a community plaza at the heart of the district. The plaza’s tiered landscape draws inspiration from the historic Myers Street School, Charlotte’s first public school for Black children, which had an exterior staircase remembered as “Jacob’s Ladder” — a community symbol for hope and upward mobility through education.

Stepping up from the plaza level to the second-level concourse connecting the Levine Center for Education and 905 Pearl Park Way, the tiered garden offers a variety of spaces with sun and shade and a rich palette of native plantings. Sculpted architectural features, including a water wall fountain, invites occupants and the broader community to engage with nature, gather socially, and take part in programmed events.
