Watson Quad Reinvention
Lafayette College sought to transform the quad area by reinforcing the pedestrian-oriented nature of the campus and inserting landscapes in response to the college’s historic and architectural context. Quad Drive, the major road circumventing the quad, was removed and replaced to create an open lawn and commemorative plaza. The craft of the historic masonry structures reflected in the material design of the pathways consists of brick with cut bluestone borders for the paths and plaza. An allée of Sugar Maples with a central arrival and drop-off area enhance the formal entrance. Multiple donor recognition elements are respectfully inserted into the landscape, often as seating elements, to reinforce a connection between past and present students.
