Health Professions Education Building
This seven-story building, constructed into a steep hill, anchors a prominent site on the hilltop campus. The building is physically connected to the adjacent building to facilitate student migration to a large lecture hall and to support health professions spaces. Ayers Saint Gross developed the program, plans, and specifications for the building, which houses the College of Optometry and the School of Nursing.
The building’s programming includes active-learning classrooms, ophthalmic optics, geometric optics, methods labs, a surgery suite, practice testing lanes, and a special procedures suite housing lasers, visual field, ocular photography, and ultrasound diagnostic instrumentation. It also features student lounges with multi-story floor-to-ceiling windows that provide sweeping views of the Appalachian Mountains. Faculty offices bridge the learning spaces and the lounges, creating opportunities for faculty and student interaction.
