East Neighborhood Commons

Elon University’s residential experience is structured around dynamic living and learning communities that support student belonging through shared interests and academic inquiry. After working with Ayers Saint Gross on a master plan update, the university engaged the firm to design new student housing to anchor the East Neighborhood. The new residence hall enhances the Georgian architecture of the historic campus with transparent common spaces animated by internal student activity.

East Neighborhood Commons houses 99 students and two faculty members and amplifies the community’s focus on civic engagement and discourse. Branching off from the main residential area, a multipurpose forum provides space for informal lectures and other learning opportunities.
The forum acts as a beacon that identifies the East Neighborhood as a tangible gateway to the campus core. This project sets the tone for future phases of housing and outwardly celebrates what is unique about the Elon experience.

Additional building spaces include a community kitchen, floor lounges, and an outdoor courtyard for entertaining and passive recreation. The interiors incorporate light wood tones and warm neutrals with pops of bright colors for a vibrant, energetic atmosphere.
