UConn School of Nursing
The University of Connecticut is one of the nation’s leading public institutions with a top-ranked nursing program dedicated to advancing the health of individuals in its community and beyond.
The new School of Nursing building establishes a home to unite clinical learning and research with high-fidelity simulation and clinical learning labs, human behavioral research labs, and wet labs that serve the program’s unique research-intensive mission. The design implements a strategic growth plan to allow for future expansion. Flexible classrooms, student collaboration, and a makerspace for nurses anchor the building’s ground floor.
The building is strategically located on campus based on its proximity to existing clinical, academic, and research space. It is comprised of two parts — a solid brick volume which draws inspiration from the campus context, and a transparent, elevated wrapper which speaks to the innovative nature of UConn Nursing. A glassy beacon terminates the primary pedestrian axis through campus, directing visitors to the entry and showcasing a variety of learning spaces within. Organic, flowing hardscape and green spaces soften the building edge with native plantings, green infrastructure for stormwater management, and open landscape for gathering or events.
