Security Square Vision Plan
Ayers Saint Gross collaborated with Baltimore County and hundreds of community stakeholders to develop a forward-looking vision for Security Square, an expansive 88-acre site situated in Western Baltimore County, Maryland, a few miles from Baltimore City and Howard County. Despite its history as an active economic hub, the condition of Security Square has declined over the years and lacks many of the needs residents expressed to serve the community as a vibrant destination. The comprehensive plan aims to revitalize the site, transforming it into a thriving, pedestrian-friendly, mixed-use hub that reestablishes its position as a safe, vibrant, and walkable neighborhood anchor.
The planning process involved a comprehensive approach to engagement. The team facilitated workshops, town halls, on-site office hours, and surveys to ensure the community’s voices shape the resulting vision for a lively, safe, and walkable community with a mix of residential, recreation, retail, entertainment, and workspace options for people of all ages.
We explored numerous design scenarios with an emphasis on integrated sustainability strategies and vibrant open spaces to enhance and connect the site. The reimagined area includes a new greenway, which will provide diverse recreation spaces, incorporate walking and biking trails, and function as a buffer against highway pollution. Integration of stormwater planets, green roofs, and rooftop solar panels across the site supports the community’s commitment to sustainability. A mix of uses provides opportunities to meet the expressed needs of community members, introduce new housing, and provide improved retail experience for existing and new businesses to revive the community.
