West Parking Garage
This 357-space garage provides parking for students, faculty, and staff at Montgomery Community College’s Takoma Park/Silver Spring campus. It also serves patrons of the college’s new Performing Arts Center and visitors to nearby Jessup Blair Park. Designed to blend with the campus architecture, the precast concrete structure is accented by brick and glass on the stair and elevator towers. Projecting metal screens on the sides provide visual interest while concrete canopies mark the entrances. The triangular site, located next to sunken railroad tracks, posed many constraints and required relocation of basement parking access, loading dock and trash facilities to the ground tier of the garage. The design met county requirements for a loop road for trucks and emergency vehicles by routing it through the garage due to the site’s limited area. The project also included the design and completion of the adjacent streetscape and reconstruction of two campus cobble-paved roads, linking them together to form a loop road.
