Kahlert Foundation Complex

The Kahlert Foundation Complex serves as an inviting home for Howard Community College’s athletics and mathematics programs, providing a unique space to support both student minds and bodies. The building’s design balances distinct department needs while reinforcing a unified sense of community and activating a previously underused section of campus.

The complex’s northern entrance, marked by extensive glazing, welcomes visitors into an open and sunlit academic wing. STEM honors research labs, class labs, a math emporium, maker space, and active learning classrooms accommodate a variety of learning styles. The four-floor building also features informal, flexible collaboration spaces, faculty offices, a tutoring center, meeting and conferencing spaces, and a vibrant academic “living room” to provide gathering and community space.

The south side of the building is home to the HCC Dragons athletics program with a full-scale competitive gym, multipurpose gym, locker rooms, fitness center, and strength and conditioning facility.

New landscape improvements align with guidelines in the college’s landscape master plan, also developed by Ayers Saint Gross. Site improvements leverage the site’s complex topography to connect outdoor learning and gathering spaces to the rest of the campus while enhancing pedestrian connectivity with a meandering STEAM walk.

Sustainable landscape elements, including native plantings and grasses and a green roof, are designed to capture stormwater while sequestering an anticipated 240 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually.
