Cal Poly Pomona engaged Ayers Saint Gross to lead a comprehensive update of the campus master plan, and to assist with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) required analyses, review, and approval process. The 1,438-acre campus is located on the eastern edge of Los Angeles County and balances urban and rural culture and amenities. As one of only three polytechnic state universities, Cal Poly Pomona emphasizes “learning by doing” with distinctive programs in engineering, architecture, agriculture, animal science, hospitality management, and sustainability.

Following a period of significant enrollment growth, and guided by a new Strategic Plan, the University sought a forward-looking master plan to align campus physical development and infrastructure capacity with academic excellence and support student success. The planning emphasized initiatives that enhance the student experience, learning, and engagement beyond the classroom. Campus circulation is a focus with a dedicated lane for the campus shuttles and new Mobility Hub to connect with regional transit. Long closed streets will be transformed as pedestrian-oriented malls with additional areas for seating and shade. Access from the I-10 freeway will be reconfigured to create a welcoming campus gateway, expanding the pedestrian-friendly core campus while redirecting through traffic around the campus perimeter.

A significant focus was placed on the academic core, where the 1960s-era college buildings require complete renovation or replacement, and the location of an earthquake fault zone restricts new construction. The plan lays out a phased implementation strategy, leveraging a repurposed campus landmark as surge space to enable sequential building upgrades. This approach addresses required seismic reinforcement, exterior envelope replacement, and more efficient building systems to reduce the University’s deferred maintenance backlog over the 20-year plan horizon.

Other planned campus-wide improvements include:

  • New Interdisciplinary Academic Resources Building (IARB) above a new Student Success Center (replacing the old Campus Center) facing the University Quad.
  • Implementation of the Climate Action Plan, including photovoltaic shade structures.
  • Expanded residential life precinct with new student housing and a Health & Wellness Center.

Overall, the Cal Poly Pomona Master Plan builds on the University’s academic and strategic plans, updating the 2000 Campus Master Plan to provide a clear, comprehensive framework for future growth, resilience, and student-centered campus life.
