Designing for Dissimilar Academic Programs

Hofstra Science And Innovation Center Classroom

As the leader of our firm’s Health Sciences practice group, Principal Laura White is an expert on designing functional spaces that are flexible enough to adapt to the changing face of health education now and in the future.

Beginning in 2020, Ayers Saint Gross led the programming and academic design for Hofstra University’s Science and Innovation Center, which houses both the Northwell School of Nursing and Physician Assistant Studies and the DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science. In a recent article for the Society for College and University Planning’s Planning for Higher Education Journal, Laura discusses the unique 3D modeling tools and virtual blocking and stacking exercises used to lay out the building and establish consensus between project stakeholders about the building’s program.

The article, “Colocating Dissimilar Academic Programs” is co-authored by Laura along with Ed Stand, BArch, LEED BD+C, and Richard S. Leddy, MBA, PE. It can be found in the January-March 2025 issue of Planning for Higher Education Journal. Read the full article here.
