Harvard Medical School’s 21-acre campus, with its iconic and historical quadrangle surrounded by five marble buildings, is located in the Longwood Medical Area of Boston. Established at this location in 1906, the campus has grown to include several more modern buildings that support the mission of the school to create and nurture a diverse community of leaders working to alleviate human suffering caused by disease.

Over time, the historical buildings have not kept up with the needs of modern science and teaching, and the more modern buildings have not supported the strong sense of community and collaboration that the school strives for. The framework plan reorganizes the campus through strategic adjustments of space, creating better connections to research, teaching, and clinical affiliates, and improving the daily campus experience. The findings of this new planning framework improve Harvard Medical School’s understanding of the types of facilities needed to meet its future research, educational, and administrative needs and inform decisions on the future real estate portfolio.
